PSYC 212 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Scatter Plot
Document Summary
We can use a pearson correlation (r) to see if they are related. When to use pearson correlation: see how two variables are related to each other. E. g. , do ice cream sales increase as the outside temperature increases: any time we have two continuous variables (x and y) that are paired (i. e. , they origination from the same individual or circumstance) What does correlation mean: pearson r can take any vale between -1. 00 and 1. 00, the strength of the correlation is indicated by the absolute value of pearson r. R = 0: the variables are not at all related. R = 1: the variables are perfectly related. I. e. , by knowing the value of x, you automatically know the value of y: the direction of the correlation is indicated by whether pearson r is positive or negative. R > 0: as x increases, y increases. R < 0: as x increases, y decreases.
