Friends and family begin to notice changes: trying to remember a word, but keeps increasing as a problem over time, people at work notice a difference, appear unable to plan out activities, moderate cognitive decline. Can"t do complex tasks (prepare dinner, do bills) Can"t recall address, etc. during medical interview. Can"t do less challenging math: mid-stage, severe. Lose most ability to know recent events. Bed ridden: treatments, no treatment will cure it, there is no cure, some treatments work on half the patients, but only for 6 months to a year, cholinesterase inhibitors. Prevent breakdown of acetylcholine, needed for learning and memory. Brand names: aricept---most well known-can be used for all stages of symptoms. Memantine: regulates activity of glutamate, another messenger involved in learning and memory, brand names: namenda. Pd-another neurological disorder, this one focuses on motor movement issues.
