Document Summary
General processes (occur in a variety of cognitive systems): How rich/detailed in the information reaching our receptors. Degree (if any) of higher mental processes on perception. Gibson"s ecological direct perception theory ( bottom-up process: wanted to find out if visual perceptions are innate or learned o o o o o. Purpose of perception is to allow an organism to function in its environment. Environment contains the necessary information to do this (locomotion being critical) Environment provides us with all the information needed to adapt to the environment/ to function well. The mental stuff is added on top of that. Optical flow objects appear to be moving past us as we walk towards something. Allows us to make judgments of where things are. Invariant features texture/density gradients & linear perspective. How far something is, if there is something blocking it. Texture/ density gradient- can"t see the details from far away.
