Peripheral nervous system (pns: collections of cell bodies : ganglion (ganglia, collections of axons : nerve, somatic nervous system. Output : neurons coming out from the brain and spinal cord and carrying signals to skeletal muscles. Skeletal muscles make up the biggest part of the body"s bulk. Ach is the output neurotransmitter for skeletal muscles. Input : neurons originating in the body that come into the brain and spinal cord carrying signals from the skin, joints, and skeletal muscles: autonomic nervous system. Output : internal organs, heart, smooth muscles (stomach, uterus, gastrointestinal organs), glands. Input : there are neurons coming back from the internal organs, but it is not known what they do. Fight or flight : comes into play under conditions of arousal when we need to burn energy. Rest and digest : comes into play under conditions when we need to.
