Catching up, natural selection misconceptions, during natural selection individuals do not change, only the population does. Evolution by natural selection is not goal directed: mutations do not occur to solve problems. Evolution does not produce more complex organisms: complex traits are routinely lost or simplified over time as a result, organisms do not act for the good of the species of evolution by natural selection. Individuals with self-sacrificing alleles die and do not produce offspring. Individuals with selfish, cheater alleles survive and produce offspring. Although organisms are often exquisitely adapted to their environment, adaptation is far from perfect. Vestigial traits confer no known benefits: organisms possessing them do not have higher fitness than those without. Lack of genetic variation can also constrain evolution, because natural selection can only work on existing genes. Young children often develop strong food preferences that sometimes seem bizarre to their parents --- such as wanting to eat only a certain food prepared in a familiar way, or being reluctant to each new foods or foods with strong or bitter tastes (like coffee and some vegetables).
