Tree rat was brought into the virgin island as an invasive species. They brought in the mongoose as a form of biocontrol. Tree rat was noctournal and could climb trees. Mongoose was the exact opposite: now there are two invasive species, mongoose harms bird and sea turtle popukation. Invasive in the caribbean, gulf of mexico, us southeast coastline, now. Because ocean temps are rising, they have a higher success for invasion: high reproductive rate. Control efforts for the invasive lionfish: florida fish and wildlife conservation commission initiative. Incentives for fisherman and recreational divers to catch and kill the lionfish. Increasing awareness (public awareness, what can be done if it is seen, preventing people from putting it in aquariums) Stages of biological invasion (see notes from lecture 16) Invasion curves: there is a lag response. It takes time before exponential growth for the species to be invasive.
