Transport from the sources to the manufacturing location was made quicker and cheaper through steam power. Expansion was a way to increase the consumer base and availability of raw materials. Biological science continues to increase its knowledge base. More want to see what the rest of the world is like. Curiosity to know more and to seek to understand more fuels a desire to investigate. Hunters, slave traders, aristocrats etc all want to experience new lands that are full of mystery and the unknown . Austria-hungary is the only one that doesn"t have colonies, more focused on dominating south eastern europe. Size of empire is important in denoting their rank as a great power. 19th century the british empire is the largest and most powerful; expanding their dominance.
