Lecture 16 Post WWII • Undefeated nations want to ruin Germany o Germany brought upon a huge shift of power o They wanted to undo the work of Bismarck  Eliminate Germany’s power o US, France, England all wanted to be dominant powers in the world o 15 Million Germans were ethically “cleansed” • Ally control system o Other nations would jointly control Germany  US and Britain wanted a more robust German presence  France and USSR wanted most destabilized Germany as possible o NATO wanted to keep US in, USSR out, and Germany destabilized • US is a far more powerful nation than USSR o Every other nation had major problems, but US only grew and benefitted  o Realist response: Can’t rely on any safeguards, anarchy  Human nature, they want more, seek to gain more  US assumed hegemonic power o American Republican politics started to favor American withdrawal from foreign  politics, smaller governments o Democra
