04/15/2014 Chapter 12 Sexual Response Cycle Phases Desire phase: sexual interest or desire, often associated with sexually arousing fantasies/thoughts  Excitement phase: pleasure and increased blood flow to genitalia (erection for men, enlarged breasts and  changes in vagina for women) Orgasm phase: sexual pleasure peaks (general muscle tension) Resolution phase: relaxation and sense of well­being following an orgasm (men have refractory period  while women are capable of multiple orgasms) Criticisms Desire and excitement phase not necessarily distinct for women Biological changes may not correlate to women’s level of desire/excitement  Etiology of Sexual Dysfunctions Immediate causes: focus on sexual performance that impedes natural sexual responses  Fears about performance
