PSYC 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Sensory Neuron, Semicircular Canals, Outer Ear
Document Summary
Sensation: process by which stimulation of sensory receptor cells leads to neural impulses to the brain: neural impulse: action potential. Perception: our brain"s interpretation of sensory messages: more subjective than sensation, perceptions without sensation: hallucinations, phantom limbs, dreams, visual illusions. Anatomy of the eye: cornea: outer part, pupil: opening. Iris: colored ring of muscle: regulates how much light goes into the eye by dilating/constricting the pupil. When one is activated, the other member of pair is inhibited. Louder amplitude = louder sound: frequency: number of waves that pass a point in space per second, measure in hertz, related to perception of pitch, high frequency = high pitch. Anatomy of the ear: outer ear, pinna: funnels sound into the ear canal, ear canal, middle ear, tympanic membrane: eardrum that vibrates when sound reaches it, ossicles: three smallest bones in the body. Amplify sound: hammer, anvil, stirrup, oval window.
