BIO 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Basal Metabolic Rate, Energy Economics, Underweight
Document Summary
Energy balance occurs when the calories coming into your body equals the calories coming out of your body. 3 ways we expend nrg (ee): to fuel the body"s basal metabolic rate (bmr). Bmr is the sum of all the involuntary activities necessary to maintain life. This excludes digestion: to fuel voluntary activity, through the body metabolic response to food (thermic effect of blood). The body"s metabolism speeds up for about 5 hours after a meal. For most basal metabolism accounts for the largest ee, followed by voluntary activity and then the thermic effect of food. For each 3500 calories you eat in excess of expenditure, you store approximately 1 lb of fat. For each 3500 you expend in excess of need you lose 1 lb of fat. Growth (during growth & preg bmr is higher) Body comp (more lean muscle mass, higher their bmr)
