Document Summary

Describe the 4 major categories of occupational airways diseases and at least one cause of each. Imaging: normal or show air trapping, airway wall thickening, emphysema. Inflammation and fibrosis - impaired gas exchange. Bronchiolitis (i think they mean bronchiectasis?) (obliterative/constrictive) Flavoring chemicals (diacetyl), oxides of nitrogen, deployment particulate matter. Describe the evidence for occupational contribution to common pulmonary diseases including copd and pulmonary fibrosis. Higher rates of disease in blacks than whites again. Puts you at risk for more infections, specifically mycobacterial infections - could contribute to chronic bronchitis and bronchiectasis - reduced immune response. Inhalation of these particles causes and/or exacerbates/speeds up disease formation and progression - faster drop in fev1, potentiates negative effects of smoking, etc. Many of these particles (cough cough silica cough cough) are carcinogenic. Silicosis and coal workers pneumoconiosis = fibrosis. Copd = bronchitis, emphysema, due to mineral dust causing airway disease. Get that same immune response we"ve talked about 78,000x for copd.
