Tailings = non-useful materials removed from the mill after the recoverable materials have been extracted aka waste. Water is used in the recovery of oil from tar sands (for deep well injection), which degrades water quality by adding metals, acids and other dissolved substance. Water is used as a coolant in most thermoelectric plants (fossil fuels) and is returned to the source in the same quantity, but at higher temperature. Golf and recreational courses during certain times of the year more pressure place on water. Banff of how of how recreational development can have impacts on the community water supply. Increased demand during certain times of year/peak tourism. Runoff contains chemicals e. g. gasoline, fertilizers coming from lawns. Hydroelectric turbines don"t cause water but have effects on environments. Reduces or eliminates habitat for fish and wildlife. Alters flow and water quality of rivers. Destroys waterfowl and wildlife nests loss of agricultural land heat pollution loss of biodiversity.
