Document Summary
Cephalocaudal pattern: the sequence in which the fastest growth occurs at the top of the body, the head. Physical growth in size, weight, and feature differentiation gradually working from top to bottom. Proximodistal pattern: the sequence in which growth starts at the centre of the body and moves towards the extremities. Sensory and motor development generally proceed according to the cephalocaudal and proximodistal principles. Height and weight increase rapidly during infancy; growth takes a slower course during the childhood years. The average na newborn is ~ 50. 8 cm long and weighs 3. 2 kg (7 lb) Newborns double their birth weight by the age of 4 months and nearly triple it by their 1st birthday. Growth slows in the 2nd year; by age 2, children average 81. 3 to 88. 9 cm, nearly half of their adult height. As the preschool child grows older, the annual percentage of increase in height and weight decreases with each additional year.
