PSY 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Prefrontal Cortex, Psy, Prosocial Behavior
Document Summary
Children"s comprehension of themselves increases exponentially from ages 8 11. Children describe themselves utilizing descriptive language involving multiple aspects, rather than physical characteristics alone. What they do, how they act, their personality, rather than their physical being. Children usually think in self-comparison, rather than solely thinking of themselves they think of themselves in comparison to others, and their capabilities in that context. Children older than 7 usually include comparative contexts to their performance. Children show an increase in perspective taking from 8 years onwards, being able to perceive the actions and perceptions of other people than themselves. Perspective taking leads to an increase in pro-social behavior, allowing children to emotionally empathize with their peers by imagining themselves in their peer"s shoes. Children become more skeptical of other"s claims with age, calling out unrealistic or impossible lies. Self-esteem is the global evaluation of the self, also known as self-worth or self-image.
