Steven karau and kipling williams conducted a meta-analysis and found social loafing to be a reliable phenomenon, displayed across numerous tasks and in countries around the world. Recent research has demonstrated social loafing among children as young as five. some group and cultural differences in tendencies to socially loaf have been found. Ying-yi hong hypothesized that there are times when people from collectivistic cultures may be especially likely to socially loaf. When these students engaged in a task with co-workers who were not being productive, the participants reduced their own efforts. Not wanting to publicly deviate from the group norm, these students conformed to the norm of working less hard. A unified view of social facilitation and social loafing has important practical implications for maximizing performance when individuals are working together. In team sports, for example, coaches would evaluate player"s performance against a weak opponent, but to stress team spirit and overall group effort during a tough game.
