For 1 to 6 months (can get diagnosed schizophrenia after 6 months) Associated with good premorbid functioning (were perfectly fine) Lasts 1 month or less (can be diagnosed schizophreniform after a month) Symptoms of schizophrenia plus a mood disorder. Disorders are independent: delusions or hallucinations for 2 weeks in absence of mood disorder symptoms, specify if bipolar or depressive type or if catatonia. Prognosis = similar to schizophrenia: persistent, no improvement without treatment. Delusions contrary to reality, but not bizarre, and it"s still possible. Later age of onset than schizophrenia: avg = 40 to 49. Prognosis: better than schizophrenia, worse than other psychotic disorders. Course of schizophrenia does vary from sue et al. (2010) based on wiersma (1998) 90% of people with schizophrenia also qualify for another dsm 5 diagnosis: 80% have a major depressive or bipolar disorder, 60% have a substance abuse disorder, ~50% have panic attacks or anxiety disorder.
