SOC 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Lumpenproletariat, Double Consciousness, Proletariat
Document Summary
Amongst blacks, these distinctions involve a set of different grade as he called them. Grade 1 involved the blacks who were earning enough to live well, blacks who had gotten into the trades etc. Grade 2 was made up of the working class living in comfortable conditions ( working in factories, proletariat) Grade 3 was made up of the poop who were struggling to make an honest living ( found it difficult to find a job etc) Grade 4 was the lower class of criminal prostitutes and loafers. Mac made a similar distinction in the lumpenproletariat. These class distinctions made it clear that blacks did not fit the stereotypes that white associated with them. That is grade 1 and 2 are doing well, not all are doing bad. He called for blacks to protest against prejudice, injustice and mistreatment. He also called for blacks to devote greater efforts to bettering themselves and doing more to educate their children.
