David: michelangelo, 1504, palazzo vecchio, florence. A committee was formed to decide where it was going to go. Wanted to be able to put it somewhere where you could walk around it. David is referred to as the manu fortis (strong hand) of god: biblical subject of david in the story of david and goliath. Goliath the giant is defeated by david who is about 12 years old. David refuses to wear any armor because god is on his side. David takes goliath down with a slingshot and then decapitates him with his own sword. Florence had a long tradition of identifying with david saw themselves as the little guy but had god on their side three davids in the town call were depicted after the battle but michelangelo"s was before the battle. Donatello"s marble david was recut and put in the city hall after it was completed - it was too small for the duomo.
