Document Summary

Final chapter 2 and chapter 3 intro: solution: a liquid that is a homogenous mixture of two or more substances (salt and water, solvent- the dissolving agent of a solution (water, solute- the substance that is dissolved (salt) Water is the primary solvent in cells. Many of the chemical and nutrient of an organism are dissolved these make up the cytoplasm of the cell. Not everything will dissolve in water: only those substances that are ionic or polar will dissolve readily in water. Hydrophilic- water loving: will dissolve in water, aka: polar, goes easily in your cells. Hydrophobic: a substance that is nonpolar and will not dissolve readily in water: oil and fats, water fearing. Water can ionize: h20 = h+ and oh- This is how h20 can break down. Ph scale paper: pure water is set at 7, neutral, anything with a ph above 7 is basic solution.
