Myocardium: thick layer of cardiac muscle: electrical signals flow directly from cell to cell, this is what contacts when the heart beats. Endocardium: thin layer of endothelial tissue: continuous with lining of blood vessels. Direct contact with the blood as it travels. Two of each chamber so it is a double system. A double circulation system consists of a: Pulmonary circuit between the heart and lungs. Deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs where it picks up oxygen. Under less pressure because it is a shorter distance. Heart muscle is thicker on the left side of the heart (because it is under more pressure) Systemic circuit between the heart and the rest of the body. The heart has four chambers and four valves. Receive blood returning back to the heart. Ventricles receive the blood then distribute it.
