Document Summary

Bsc 114 lecture 4- carbon and the molecular diversity of life. Can for 4 covalent bonds w/ a variety of atoms. Intersection point from which a molecule can branch off in up to 4 directions. Molecules that distinguish living matter are all composed of carbon compounds (dna, proteins, carbohydrates, etc. ) Chemical diversity of carbon has made possible the great diversity of living organisms on earth. In molecules with multiple carbons, each carbon bonded to four other atoms has a tetrahedral shape. When two carbons are joined by a double bond, the molecule has a flat shape. The electron configuration of carbon gives it covalent compatibility with many different elements. The valences of carbon and its most frequent partners (hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen) are the building code that governs the architecture of biological molecules. Organic chemistry is the study of compounds that contain carbon. Organic compounds range from small, simple molecules to colossal ones w/ substantial structural complexity.
