CTD 261 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Microfiber, Warp Knitting, Knitting Machine
Document Summary
Now a predominant fabric structure, especially in women"s and children"s clothing. It is because of comfort, appearance retention, stretch and recovery because of loop structure beyond fiber and yarn types. Knit fabrics can be manufactured form a single set of yarns. The two main types of knit fabrics are weft (filling) knits and warp knits. Weft knits are the more common of the two; they may be made on either circular or flatbed knitting machines. Before any of this, there was hand knit. Knit fabrics are produced at a much faster rate than woven fabrics; speeds of production are over 60 yards per hour in most cases. More yarn is needed to produce a knit fabric comparable to a woven fabric-knit a porous structure. Finer yarn needed for same amount of coverage $ Uniform yarn needed to prevent thick and thin formation $ Knit fabrics (5%) have a greater potential for shrinking as compared to woven fabrics (2%)
