Much qualitative research is based on symbolic interactionism. Blumer was a student of george herbert mead. Ghm really first developed the concepts of si. B came up with the phrase symbolic interactionism . Six basic premises of symbolic interactionism: what people say and do are the result of how they interpret their social world. In other words, human behavior depends on learning - rather than biological instinct: humans communicate what they learn through symbols. Certain things provide the raw material with which people create their definitions and meanings. The meaning of a thing grows out of how people act/react towards it. These meanings allow people to create their reality.
