Document Summary
Cj 300 - lecture 11: labeling and reintegrative shaming theory (ch. Actual deviant behavior less important than who assigned the label and why. Labels are both dependent (effect) and independent variable (cause) Cause: given a label, then has behavior after given that label. Effect: has a certain behavior, then a label describing that behavior is given. It"s more important as to who applies this label. Ex: a grandma applying the label would be more important to someone over a random person applying the same label. Symbolic interactionism: how our self is constructed through interaction with other people. Can be based on relationships (mother, daughter, sister, etc. ) Looking-glass self: what our self actually is. Label as an independent variables (cause of crime and deviance) It is that label that leads to criminal behavior. Primary: the label is not the cause of the behavior (applied after the deviance) Deviance that occurs prior to the label being applied.
