CJ 303 Lecture 2: CJ 303 #2
Document Summary
Tendency to think and feel negatively about members of other groups. Prejudices are prejudgements and they may be positive or negative. Fear, anger, strong dislike, hatred, other negative emotions. Numerous studies have shown that everyone has implicit biases. We all have preconceived notions, regardless of our background or skin color, that can play into decision-making. Awareness of these biases allows them to be addressed. Found that people felt more social distance from some categories than others. Treatment or consideration based on group membership rather than individual merit. Prejudice and discrimination are related but don"t necessarily occur together. Prejudice is an attitude, discrimination is an action. You can have prejudice without having discrimination - you may have biases, but that doesn"t mean that you are rude to other people (discriminatory) Preference isn"t a bad thing, but if it leads to treating someone differently based on, for example, race, then it leads to discrimination. ~ only give racist remarks around other bigots.
