Weaker curriculum, lower-quality teachers, and less access to resources. Can lead to school segregation by race. Residents suffer high rates of predatory crimes. Merton"s theory - the american dream being tied to material success. Focuses on lower-class people, leaving out other classes. People adapt in different ways, but the goal is the american dream. Education, hard work, drive, and perseverance = how to reach. Dream, but still happy (go to school, but go back home) Retreatism - give up, homeless people, addictions, etc. and rely on other people. Rebellion - don"t care about material success, but they make money in order to give back. Discounts biological and individual explanations (broader explanation) Holds that each society has dominant values with acceptable methods of achieving goals. Not all can achieve these goals, or do so acceptable - creating social strain. Ex: consider a person living below the poverty line with little opportunity but is exposed to images of the american dream.
