Document Summary

Now we want to take a look at a particular set of drugs: poisons (and forensic toxicology) Drugs v. poison - essentially no difference. Poison: anything that is lethal in quantity. Ex: child gets in the liquor cabinet, medicine cabinet, etc. Difference between a mistake and purposefully = needs a social, legal investigation. Accident v. on purpose = social, legal investigation. Ex: a fish eats something lethal and then you eat that lethal fish. How drugs work on the body (physiological system) Means that your body is already set up on a natural lock and key system. Ex: dopamine leads to a certain feeling and it fits in the body in a specific place. If you can get a drug that is similar to another key in your body, then it can take over the original key. Ex: heroin or cocaine taking over for dopamine because it fits in the natural lock and key system.
