CJ 421 Lecture 12: CJ 421 Notes 02-15-2017
Document Summary
Going with the flow: serology and body fluids. Last time we looked at soil, plant, and animal trace. Serology = the study of bodily fluids. Saliva, sweat, tears, vomit, blood, urine, etc. Body fluids tend to come from a violent crime. 2 most common fluids: blood and semen. A lot of dna is taken from serology. Luminol - reacts with the hemoglobin and oxygen in blood and produces chemical luminescence as it reacts (produces a soft blue light when it reacts) You don"t need a blue light with luminol, just a fairly dark environment. When someone tries to clean up blood, it looks messy not all pretty. Trade off: won"t react if you"ve bleach to clean up. Sodium hypochlorate (in bleach) will reach with the hemoglobin in blood, so luminol will not react - this leads to you missing a clue.
