Document Summary
The travails of the continental army: enthusiasm, 1775-1776, healthy and hygiene, desertion and corruption, soldiers and civilians. Colonists created the continental congress in response to parliament. Parliament wanted to make the colonists remember who that being british was also about paying taxes and authority, not just freedoms. Compromise between parliament and colonies became farther and farther apart. Many colonial leaders still wanted to stay in the british empire. No longer cared about the colonists and thought they needed to be punished. Sent the olive branch petition to the king. Even at the end of 1775 americans were still hesitant becoming their own country in fear of anarchy and death if they lost the war. 1776- colonies were in a odd position, fighting the british empire while still wanting to stay with the british empire. King declared the americans in open rebellion and sent thousands more troops. Pamphlet called common sense went around the colonies.
