With many men out fighting in the war, women were forced to take a larger role in society such as taking care of the farm or the soldiers. There was a new understanding in regards to the role women played as mothers (republican motherhood) Women were supposed to train their children and encourage them to have strong moral characters and civic duty. In order for this to occur women had to be educated and thus there was an increase in women"s education. Increase in academies for women to educate them, often times for the wealthy. Companionate marriage- idea that men and women in american culture should be companions and partners rather than male dominance. Lawmakers also felt this change of ideas and divorces became more common and granted to women. Idea behind this all was that if women were educated they would create better men for the future of america.
