Document Summary

3/23/17- the second great awakening and the birth of the middle class: popular christianity in a time of change. Greed and materialism were on the rise, people started to care less and less about religion and salvation. People cared less about each other, and the world was much more secular. Post-revolutionary world people understood that they were sinners but wanted a religious belief that went with the time that they lived in. Wanted to know that their economic and spiritual futures were in control. On a hillside in kentucky preachers preached to a crowd of 20,000 for a week straight. This was the start of the religious revival. What was different about this revival is that they did not tell people they were worthless but rather empowered them and gave them hope. This was called the cane ridge revival. Revivalist leaders also invited enslaved/free african americans and saw them as equal in the eye of god.
