2/28/17- american expansion 1775-1820: settlement, slavery, and sectionalism: new settlement in the northwest territory. After the war of 1812 there was rapid expansion of states being added to the us. People started to migrate towards the west under very poor conditions. Disease, indians, bandits, poor living conditions, etc. Slavery was illegal in the northwest territory limiting the labor that could be brought to this region. Consisted of small self-sufficient farms, not much profit. Women"s labor was key to the success of families in this territory. Required the effort of everyone in the family. Often times extended families would move together, creating a rapid sense of community and growth. Community and families were interdependent on each other. Tobacco economy never recovered after the american revolution. Became a less popular crop and grain products rose in popularity. Corn and wheat were not as labor intensive and resulted in more slave population than many plantations could use.
