Cut cost by not purchasing safe equipment. 3 labor actions: the great railroad strike. Starts in west virginia spreads to md, il, mi, & pa. People are killed: the haymarket affair. Knights of labor are blamed for it people fled to the afl: pullman strike. Moves out of the city creates own company town. Workers fighting for more will get fired.
