Europe and the great war: background to the great war (wwi, germany, france, and alliances. Bismarck at war with austria, then allies with austria. Bismarck has to keep france away from russia. Bismarck has to choose a horse (austria or russia) Russia wants a warm water port long term goal. 1877 britain abandoned policy of propping up ottoman empire. 1870s bismarck tries to create the empires league. Idea is to keep conservative eastern european monarchs together. 1880s bismarck comes up with the reinsurance treaty commits. Russia not to sign an alliance aimed at germany (reconstructed every three years) 1890 new empire takes control of germany kizer wilhem ii. Britain isn"t going to ally with france. Wilhem would never sign a treaty with the french. Nicholas ii has his fathers concept of repression but not his iron will. He is starting to lose control over russia. 1900 europe divided into two blocks (britain is sitting off by itself)
