Document Summary
An ampule is a single dose of injectable medication in a liquid form. Range in size from 1ml to 10ml. Glass with a scored constricted neck designed to break easily. Medication is aspirated with a filtered needle and syringe (filtered needle prevents glass particles from being aspirated into the syringe). Tap the top of the ampule lightly with your finger to dislodge any fluid that has collected above the neck. Place a small gauze pad or alcohol swab around the ampule to protect your fingers from the broken glass. Snap the neck of the ampule quickly and firmly away from your face and hands. Draw up the medication using the filtered needle and syringe, be sure the needle is long enough to access the medication. You may hold it upside down or set it on a flat surface. Do not allow the needle tip or shaft to touch the rim of the ampule.
