Sterile gloves, must be put on above your waist anything below waist is considered sterile. Baggy sleeves, watch, etc. must be removed before donning sterile gloves. Only touch the cuff, do not adjust until both gloves are on. Introduction of a latex or plastic tube through the urethra into the bladder. The catheter allows a continuous flow of urine to exit the body. Long-term indwelling catheterization (can permanently stay on leg: severe urinary retention with recurrent utis, skin rashes, ulcers, wound irritated by contact with urine, terminal illness when linen changes are painful for patient. Intermittent or straight catheter: non-retention, no balloon, one lumen. Indwelling or retention catheter: multiple lumen, inflatable balloon. Coude catheter: curved tip, indwelling, used for males with enlarged prostates. Condom catheter: non-invasive, worry about moisture, especially if they aren"t circumcised, can put skin-prep, helps them stay on better. Older individual who can"t hold their legs up or an obese patient may need help holding legs up.
