NUR 372 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Hypercapnia, Respiratory Acidosis, Passive Smoking
Document Summary
Influenza and pneumonia immunizations are important for all clients who have copd, but esp. Important for older adults: risk factors, advanced age: older clients have a decreased pulmonary reserve due to age-related lung changes, cigarette smoking is primary risk factor in developing. Copd: alpha 1 antitrypsin (aat) deficiency, exposure to air pollution, expected findings, chronic dyspnea. Irregular breathing pattern: thin extremities and enlarged neck muscles, dependent edema secondary to right sided heart failure, clubbing of fingers and toes, pallor and cyanosis of nail beds and mucous membranes, decreased 02 sat, lab tests. In copd, low arterial levels of oxygen serve as the primary drive for breathing. However, in most cases, oxygen levels should be maintained between 88%-92: clients who have copd can need 2-4l/min of oxygen via nasal cannula or up to 40% via venturi mask. Clients who have chronically increased paco2 levels usually require 1-
