An individual"s characteristic thought, emotional response, and behavior. Personality trait: consistent pattern across time and circumstances. Psychophysical: influence of culture, biology, and cognition. Nearly all personality traits have genetic component. We cannot go in someone"s head and turn off or turn on a specific gene to alter their personality. Identical twins have a more similar personality than fraternal twins. Adopted kids have no more similarity in personality than two random people off the street. Presence of parenting matters more than styles. Three characteristics: activity level, emotionality, sociability. People studied hyenas and found that animals do in fact have personalities. Defense mechanisms: we do best with defense mechanisms. Superego: large unconscious thing, mama, the government, says to do this . Id: says to do whatever you want, have all that sugar, have a lot of sex. Fixation: freud thought children could get stuck on a specific psychosexual development. Internal: we have control over what happens to us.
