ANA 407 Lecture Notes - Lecture 29: Posterior Nasal Apertures, Inferior Nasal Concha, Paranasal Sinuses
Document Summary
Lecture #29 - nose, mouth, pharynx and larynx. Briefly describe the anatomy of the nose and nasal cavity. The framework of the external nose is composed of bones and hyaline cartilage. The tip of the nose is called the apex. Inferior to the apex are two external nares or nostrils. The nasal cavity is divided into left and right halves by the nasal septum, which begins anteriorly at the nares and ends posteriorly at the posterior nasal apertures (choanae). The lateral walls of the nasal cavity are marked by three ridges, the superior and middle conchae (these are parts of the ethmoid bone) and the inferior nasal concha (this is one of the paired bones of the skull). The mucoperiosteum that covers the conchae is continuous with that of the paranasal sinuses; the sinuses open into the nasal cavity. The nasolacrimal duct opens into the inferior meatus, i. e. , the area inferior to the inferior concha.
