Prokaryotes are the oldest and simplest life forms - abundant on earth - shaped environment - early photosynthetic bacteria - changed to oxidizing environment. Internal structure - prokaryotes - no membrane bound organelles - no cytoskeletons - enzymes and proteins are free floating in cell. Eukaryote - highly compartmentalized - many internal organelles - cytoskeleton. Chromosomes - pro - single circular chromosome - nucleoid region of cell. Asexual - binary fission- splitting in half - simple - fast. Lateral gene transfer - movement of genetic material - cross species border. Thermotoga maritima - 20% genes are archean in origin - survive in extraordinarily high temperature. Prokaryote tree - web of life - move horizontally. Prokaryote flagella - simple single fiber - rigid - spins - Eukaryote flagella - complex - 9+2 microtubule structure - move with whip like motion - sperm tail.
