Symbiosis = when two or more organisms interact in more or less permanent relationships. Lichens used as indicator of level of air pollution (dies if air pollution is high) -> occurs everywhere in all habitats in all biomes. 3-part symbiosis (two kinds of fungus and a photosynthetic organism a green algae or cyanobacteria) Fungal cells engulf algal cells, and the alga makes sugars that feeds itself and the fungus. Most lichens are 2 kinds of fungus (ascomycete and basidiomycete) Trevor goward fungi that have discovered agriculture like they"re farming their own photosynthesis: parasitism benefits one and harms the other (long-term and prey does not die) Mistletoe (many lost chlorophyll and leaves cannot make own food must absorb nutrients from plant host = complete or obligate parasite) (some ability to photosynthesize = hemi parasite)
