Document Summary

Most traits are determined by several genes at different places on the chromosomes. Traits are determined by only two possible alleles. But many trait may have more than two possibilities. Many traits have multiple alleles not just two. Example: abo blood type there are 3 alleles = a,b, o, so there are six genotypes: aa, ab, ao, bb, bo, oo. Aa and ao are blood type a . Bb and bo are blood type b . But we now know that some genes affect many traits. Long limbs and fingers, flexible joints, tall and skinny, nearsighted, defects in heart valves and aorta, mutation in gene on 15th chromosome. Genes are arranged in a linear array along the chromosomes. Chromosome theory of inheritance was proposed in 1903. The banding is due to staining and can be seen with a microscope. You have to use stains to see them. Chromosomes are seen only in condensed form when preparing for nuclear division.
