Document Summary
What darwin didn"t know: mendel and basic genetics. He knew traits were passed down but he couldn"t understand how. Blending inheritance- people believed that the traits of parents were blended together to create an intermediate form. The problem with blending is that eventually all offspring of the same species will begin to look alike. He was unable to earn a teaching degree because he flunked out of college. His mathematical analysis allowed him to see that traits will be passed on in predictable ratios. The outcome of flower color was 3:1 purple to white flowers. Mendel self crosses each of the f2 generation and focused on the f3. 2/3 of the purple flowers don"t breed true and white flowers always breed true. Blending inheritance does not happen (no lavender flowers) Homozygote/homozygous- when the two alleles are the same. (allele from mom and the allele from dad).
