Organization: a social system comprised of various individuals (components) that organize and coordinate their efforts in order to achieve goals (collective and individual) Many use the term organization to refer to businesses and other profit driven entities. Not all organizations are businesses non-profit, governmental, community, and interest based organizations. The term virtual organization can be used to describe an organization that predominantly relies on non-physical interaction: or the non-physical aspects of any organization. Latter is more prevalent use: its critical to consider the specific nature and context. Formality of structure (typically a higher degree of formal structure) Organizational communication as the study of how the context of the organizations influences communication processes. Structure elements that shape the systems patterns of behavior/action (communication/information ins social systems) Organizational structures are not static, but evolve dynamically. Change over time (in response to the environment). 2 forms: formal rules, divisions, roles = organizational chart, informal chemistry, cultural, individual attributes.
