Movement of middle class families into the former working class neighborhoods of london in the mid 1960"s. Some viewed it as a beneficial undoing of the white flight. Change ethnic neighborhoods into something bland and uninteresting. Destroys established low income urban residents: social networks, higher rents, move to less desirable places where they no longer feel their own. Question of whether low income residents moved away from gentrifying neighborhoods at a higher rate than they did from non-gentrifying neighborhoods. No evidence of higher rate in gentrifying neighborhoods. Low income residents of gentrifying neighborhoods were less likely to move out of the neighborhood than low income residents of neighborhoods that had none of the typical hallmarks of gentrification. Other factors, other than displacement that could harm the poor: higher cost of living, substantial rent rise, residents would move out less. Gentrification is both a challenge and an opportunity. In movers change neighbor composition, increased exposure to more educated and networked residents.
