The ability to ignore meaningless sounds, sights and stimuli to focus on more critical stimuli. An infant will stop sucking to pay attention to more interesting stimuli. Play is the work of infants, toddlers and preschoolers, Schemas or early mental organizational categories of learning. The senses take in all the stimuli for learning. Accommodate new events by modifying an established schema. Sucking a pacifier-assimilates with a new pacifier into established schema, but has to modify existing schema when challenged with drinking out of a cup. Developing play patterns as child becomes more skilled physically and cognitively. At 5 months, may just bat a toy, but as child gets older, may shape sort.
