Eating disorders: eating disorders, multiple interacting causes. Biological - may be genetic factors that are expressed as a consequence of pubertal hormone change. Psychological - conflicts lead to personality and behavioral changes that promote and support dieting. Social: mass media influences that popularize unrealistic notions regarding desirable weight (getting worse). Gymnastics, dance, wrestling: warning signs - loose clothing, drop in grades, social isolation, eating alone. Incidence: many more with poor diet, eating habits, & body image problems. As many as 20% of all young women have clinical problem. Anorexia nervosa: intensive fear of gaining weight & fat, refusal to maintain body weight, altered perception of appearance, absence of 3 / more consecutive menstrual cycles (females, of course) 2 - 5% of adolescent women & 5% of all cases are men. Physical appearance - emaciated, rough, dry, cold skin, hair loss, tooth loss. Family - over involved, rigid, over protective, conflictive: medical complications (pem)
