NTR 108 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Dental Caries, Bone Remodeling, Bone Mineral
Document Summary
Module 9 bone metabolism: bone and skeleton. 99% of all ca in body is in the bone (1% in blood system) Basic structure is calcium phosphate/calcium carbonate with protein. Formaion = breakdown: humans have the most bone by the late 20. Can be much less if not enough ca or vd is present. Can be helped by hormone replacement therapy (stand treatment) Calcium, phosphorus, fluoride, vitamin a and vitamin d. Tetany (cramping: osteoporosis (break easily)---blood pressure, hypertension. People with low calcium intake (milk products, etc) Dietary sources: dairy (300mg/cup) (same in fat free milk) Tofu (made with ca: molasses (135 mg/tbsp) Special notes: increased needs: growth b) c) d) Kidney/liver failure: due to lack of vd acivaion. Age (elderly) losing bone; decreased absorpion: high phosphate diet may increase needs. Part of teeth (as a contaminant: makes teeth resistant to dental caries/caviies. Deiciency signs/symptoms: dental caries with poor mouth hygiene. People who drank unluoridated water (tap water has; botled water not)
