NTR 108 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Body Water, Soy Sauce, Extracellular Fluid
Document Summary
Module 11 water, electrolytes, acid-base balance: water, most essenial, major component of all living things: 60% of weight c. Excreion of waste: through urine and fecal water. Extracellular luid (40%; outside of cells) b) c) Body controls amount water by regulaion paricle concentraions (ions, mainly) Ions = electrolytes na+, k+, cl- (charged paricles---water atracted---water balance) Best to think of the process of moving ions with water following: sodium na+ (single posiive charge) Regulator of luid volume (balance: muscle and nerve contracion (ex: heart) d. Loss mainly occurs from skin and stomach (sweaing and vomiing) People on very low sodium diet due to special diets (kidney disease, hypertension, heart disease) Hypertension is not only due to sodium intake (weight/physical acivity/blood pressure) Anyone over 51yr of age, african americans and those that have hypertension, Diabetes or chronic kidney disease should consume < 1,500 mg/day. Typical fast found meal (burger, fries, soda) provides > 1,500 mg: potassium k+ (single posiive charge)
